The Lair

Going out at 9:00 and walking to The Lair. Sitting in that little crowded room with the Baco Boys and Che-Na-Wah Girls (hoping one will look at me). Bringing back BLT's for the campers.

The Zoom Reunion

Thanks to Lew, Peter and Harvey for putting together a great session this past Sunday evening.  It was great to hear stories from the older, old men and to see Campers like me that saw the end of the line.

Sad to hear about the losses to our ranks.

The Balfour "Doctor"...

Does anyone remember a kind of strange and unusual doctor that we had at Balfour? It was in the early 70's. He was real pale looking with white hair and he always wore dark glasses. He was tattooed, also and was a chain smoker. I remember talking wit

My friends and mentors

Believe it, or not, my years at Balfour had a profound impact on my life. I realized that NYC was not the center of the universe, contrary to popular opinion. It also taught me how to live, cooperate and get along with others. My favorite thing to do

College Days

Remember College Days? I remember being on the Oberlin University team. Gary Fader was the leader. I was researching about him and noticed that he was an alumni of Oberlin. Who knew? "Who's gonna win? OBERLIN!" Thanks for being a great counselor and

Every year I recall there was a giant hide and seek contest using the entire camp to hide in. At the end of it all, John Feil could not be found. I walked up behind the chow hall and saw a small shed no bigger than 3 or 4 feet square. I opened the do

The Balfourian quotes

I just read page 4 of the July 1972 Balfourian newsletter, that is in the photo section on this site. At the end there are two hilarious quotes. The first is by Kenny Wedeen:

"Watch out or you'll get poison ivory."

There is one by Bruce Cohen:

Jogging old fogey's memories...

Do I have your attention? Good. I thought of something to tax your memories: Remember Bill Moose? He was the Camp handyman. He was a Minerva local that maintained all of the buildings and other stuff. I remember every summer, there was a softball gam

Favorite music of the time

Something that I vividly remember about my Balfour years, was the varied tastes in music. I remember that Harvey Kojan was into Chicago (am I right, Harvey?), Ross Tenzer was into the Kinks and the Average White Band (LOL), I think Jon Feil was into

Potato Pancakes

Remember that speech that Bernie used to give every year about "Potato Pancakes"? That used to really crack me up. It went something like this: In the mess hall, in front of the entire camp, Bernie would call attention to himself. Then, while graspin
