My friends and mentors

Believe it, or not, my years at Balfour had a profound impact on my life. I realized that NYC was not the center of the universe, contrary to popular opinion. It also taught me how to live, cooperate and get along with others. My favorite thing to do at Balfour was backpacking and mountain climbing. To this day I am still doing those things and I include my family. I have hiked, backpacked and climbed mountains all over the world and I now live on top of a mountain.

I didn't have many friends at Balfour, but the ones that I did have, I remember vividly to this day. My friends were Alan Kaufman, Ken Gould, Mike Lumpy Mechanic, Barry Schanker, Andrew Schoenberg, Mitty Lieberson, Stu Pfeil. My mentors were Bennet Lipper, Jon Pfeil, and Gary Fader. If I didn't include you in my "list", that's just the way it is. Alot of Balfourians were kind of cruel to some folks and most didn't give me the time of day. Regardless, I endeavored to have a good time and I think that I accomplished that.

I recognized your name instantly. I can still taste the corn we cooked by the algie lake. Have you ever been back there?
I backpacked a few times in the Adirondack high peaks area after Balfour ended. In '77 I moved to the western US and never really went back east after that.

  • Wow Alan I am doing great. Yes it was the last year. Friend me on Facebook search Alan Zimmer Coral Springs Florida.
  • I remember you, too. And Barry Schanker, Todd Glickstern. That was the last year for the camp. I'm friends with Ross Tenzer and Harvey Kojan on FB. How are you doing these days?

  • I remember you Alan. You where my assistant counselor, Ross was my counselor. I will never forget how you rolled your own cigarettes. I still remember you taking us camping and hiking to the algae lake.

  • You know, perhaps I'm being a little hasty. Now that I've perused this site, I remeber having alot more friends and mentors than I thought I did. Like the Gelfand brothers, the Levin brothers, Lanny Aranoff, the Liebersohn brothers, Ross Tenzer, Barry Kaufman, Artie Kempner. The list just goes on and on...
  • Hey Alan I remember you really well from Balfour and always really thought you were a great kid I live in california and I am happily married with a great wife and two great girls Will write again soon Hope all is well Your friend, Bennet Lipper
  • Yeah, I have a few friends that have stayed together through the years. Some of them moved to Idaho when I did. Among those are my wife and sister and soon my parents. My dad is 90 years old and still as sharp as a tack. By the way, I found a bunch of Balfour snapshots that my parents took during the parents weekend. Unfortunately, I'm in all of the pics. But, I did find a couple of pics with other campers in them. There's one of Ken Gould and I in a canoe in the lake. We're about 12 or 13 years old.
  • I don't think yur experience was much different than most of us who lived at Balfour. I still have people I consider close friends from those days...even though we don't see each other often.
