The Green Briar

Green, green, the Briar's green

At the rock of Minerva Hill,

Four flats, a hundred bucks,

And it's down at Gallagher's still.

I'm sure that I'm not alone in remembering that one, but I have no idea if I have the number of bucks correct.

  • I thought that I remember "eight hundred bucks," but, since that seemed crazy for the 60's, I went with "a hundred." I was 10 in 1968, and the ditty was catchy, so it stuck with me.

  • The Green Briar ditty dates back to 1964 -- I believe it was written for Color War. It refers to a camp vehicle that was nearly wrecked by a counselor and took many weeks at Gallagher's (the garage in Minerva) to get fixed. For what it's worth, I remember it being eight hundred bucks, so one can imagine Bernie's distress.

The amazing thing is that the ditty somehow survived for Don to recall it -- it was catchy enough, but hardly imperishable. I was one of the few people still there in the 69-70 era who went back as far as 64, so perhaps I was responsible, though there are several other possible culprits like Mike Tangredi. Perhaps we will never know.
