  • As I recall we referred to him as Uncle Bobby while he was still on the "lam"... I remember that he was dug into a ditch right next to a police roadblock for a day or two....

Mark, I believe his name was Robert Garrow. We were all so freaked out that Bernie had us turn all the camp lights out and the counselors were on all night OD. I made a body out of the kids clothes in Lew Baders bunk, and we hung it off the rafters. Bennett Lipper was walking to the HC shack to relieve some of us at around 2am. I yelled to check out the noise in Lew's bunk(Lew was OD at the HC shack). I thought Bennett would kill me! Did scare him good though! Neal Freiman

Roy is great! I'll get him on the site this weekend.
  • I had a karate instructor in 1977 that was a prison guard in Danemora prison (where Garrow was). Garrow tried to intimidate him. The guard called his bluff. He said that Garrow was a model prisoner after their "encounter".
  • It wa actually one of the raccoons living under the HC shack, who came out every night for the famous bologna sandwiches and milk...there goes the rabbi's endosement!!!!

It was amazing how much we all freaked out the kids about this situation...BTW, remember the night that lightning almost hit the gym when we were all walking into it for a rainy night activity?
  • Some counselors thought it funny (and it was) to make loud noises and throw rocks on the roof of our bunk.
He never got close to the camp apparently-- he killed a hiker in Wells and then tried to get to Speculator-- both over 20 miles away. But it was scary.

Years later in 1978 he escaped from prison in Fishkill after faking paralysis for many years-- just walked out. I remember hearing the news report and running to lock my front door in Merrick.

  • It was Robert Garrow. We took the Juniors Group on a hike down to Minerva one Wednesday and we were pretty sure that he was making a call from the Mountainview. I remember driving my '65 Dodge Dart in North Creek with Lanny Aronoff and a couple of girls from Che-Na-Wah and having to stop at a police roadblock. They made me open the trunk and then told us not to camp out and to keep our eyes open. Pretty scary time.

Neal - I forgot all about that story with Bennett. That was great.
